WEDDINGS AT GURNEY'S MONTAUK

Engagement season is here and wedding season is right around the corner! From welcome drinks to a farewell brunch, our unforgettable locations at the resort in Montauk give each wedding and every event special meaning in its own distinctive setting. We took some time to chat with Betsi Ewing, owner and lead photographer at Betsi Ewing Weddings

Betsi grew up with a camera in hand and spent her early life honing her skills through practice, education, and top-flight mentorships. Now, she travels extensively to capture extraordinary weddings and events around the world.

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

Hello, I'm Betsi! I grew up with a camera in hand and spent my early life honing my skills through practice, education, and top-flight mentorships. Now, I travel extensively to capture extraordinary weddings and events around the world.

I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve, and believe there is nothing more compelling than real life and real love. Celebrating them both through the art of photography is truly a dream! The emotional connection that is created between myself and the people I work with drives me. This connection is always based on trust, compassion, and my ability to bring out the best in my couples and the ones they love. I honor those connections by combining documentary, editorial, and artistic photography, to create meaningful and memorable images.

2. What inspired you to become a photographer?

My interest and obsession with photography started decades ago. Our family kept meticulously organized photo albums from each year. I have spent a lifetime looking through these photos and hearing the stories behind them over and over. Images evoke memories, understanding, and senses, even from life events that happened long before I was in the world. Our stories are important and photography is an incredible gift to illustrate our memories, families and history.

3. How does the spring/summer wedding season differ from fall/winter in Montauk?

Spring is a gorgeous time for a Montauk wedding! Everything is blooming and fresh. My favorite couple of weeks is when the cherry blossoms are popping off, what a perfect background for a wedding photo. The summer is always fun, high energy all around and the weather is hot and summery. The fall/winter season is nice because things calm down. It’s more locals that come after the high summer season so things are a bit more quiet and less touristy.

4. What are the top 3 things every bride & groom should be prepared for?

Weather, support and a great timeline! Stay open, the weather on the east coast can be unpredictable. The day will go ahead, rain or shine, and with the right team you will have an amazing day. Have support and delegate! Hire a wedding planner or day of coordinator to help the day go smoothly. You don’t want to be worried about food & beverage service when you should be dancing!! Chat through your timeline with all your vendors, it’s especially important we carve out enough time to capture all your “must have” moment’s throughout the day.

5. What sets you apart from other wedding and event photographers?

Most of my client’s have become lifelong friends and say they felt super comfortable and at ease throughout the day. I try to blend into the environment and be super easy to work with AND be around. I’m also a trained yoga teacher so maybe I add a little zen to a BIG day.

6. Do you have any favorite moments from weddings you’ve shot at Gurney’s?

The epic sunset photos on the beach are always memorable! Sandy feet, veils and hair blowing all over, I love that vibe!

7. What’s something you wish clients knew about wedding photography?

Hire a professional! Not all photographers fit the mold for a wedding day. You want someone with experience and confidence.

8. What's one question you should ask someone you're thinking about hiring as your wedding photographer?

What’s their approach and if it aligns with your personality and preference? You want your photographer to be someone you’d like to be friends with and spend time with… they will be with you behind the scenes during the biggest day of your life. Make sure they are a good match and will bring an ease and energy to the day for you.
