Behind HOUSEWORK, Sydney Miller’s Hit Workout Plan

By Editor 2021, July

Sydney Miller is no stranger to the world of boutique fitness. Building off her signature beats, Miller launched HOUSEWORK in 2017, a musically-driven class that balances Pilates-based exercises with high-intensity cardio which she also teaches every Friday at Gurney's Montauk.

We spoke with Sydney about her experience building and expanding her brand, and got a sneak peek at what’s next for this fierce fitness guru.

How has HOUSEWORK evolved since 2017?

From the actual class format to the way it is delivered to our community, HOUSEWORK has evolved so much over the past few years. The class is now more creative and complex, and truly feels like a curated experience that hits every muscle group.  As my clients get stronger, I keep pushing them to take on tougher choreography and sequencing.

How has the brand expanded over the years?
We've grown from an in-person class with 30 or so people in NYC to a global digital community.  I launched the HOUSEWORK® App in June 2020 and now have thousands of people doing HOUSEWORK across the globe—it has been incredible to see.

During the pandemic, I also started teaching zoom classes in lieu of my in-person classes, which really helped expand my community well beyond NYC.  Those Zoom classes quickly became a staple in people's schedules; when you see the same faces five days a week, you start to build relationships that go beyond the class itself.  For that reason, I launched a VIP program in early 2021 where regulars commit to a certain amount of classes each month—they're invited to a private group where we hold each other accountable, encouraging each member to keep up the work.  People are making big changes not just in their body, but also in their confidence and spirit.

Aside from the classes, HOUSEWORK has grown into a full merchandise line (think hats, sweatshirts, and all of the props you need for class like bands, sliders, and of course the pink HOUSEWORK mat).  We recently launched our first-ever activewear line featuring a white bra and short set, which is out this week!

What is your favorite song to workout to?

My number one workout favorite song is Pressure (by Nadia Ali, Starkillers, and Alex Kenji), specifically the Alesso Remix.

What is something you cannot live without?

I definitely can't live without my Spotify playlists.  Music inspires me not just for my job but helps shift my mood during the day — a great song can help you take on the world.

How do you start your day?

Coffee 100% every day and then HOUSEWORK, of course!

You’ve spent this past summer in Montauk. Do you have a favorite memory?

Seeing Diplo play a small show at Rushmeyers was definitely a highlight of my summer.  He is one of my favorite DJs of all time and I got to be within arm's length of him—so close that he took a selfie of us on my phone!

Who or what inspires you?

My clients inspire me all day, every day.  When I hear stories from my clients about how they wore a sports bra for the first time in a workout, posted a sweaty selfie for the first time on Instagram, or simply that they’re actually looking forward to their workouts instead of dreading them, it inspires me to continue to show up as best as I can for them.

What is something you are looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to seeing one of my favorite artists, Rufus Du Sol, play at Red Rocks! I actually bought the tickets two years ago ( obviously the show didn't happen as planned), but I can’t wait to finally see them at this magical venue.
